Throughout the TechGirls program, I did so many things I’d never done before. I’d never been so far away from home. I’d never met so many amazing people in one day. I’d never sat with a different person each day at dinner. But I wouldn’t want it any other way.
From the TechGirls experience, I learned much more than Java, game design, and cybersecurity. It was an eye-opening experience to talk to girls from countries that are thousands of miles away and yet instantly finding similarities. The barriers that we imagine exist between people from different countries instantly disappeared. In its place arose personal connections and empathy. Now I truly believe that the similarities we share are stronger than our differences.
One of my fondest memories is teaching and playing volleyball with the girls. There’s nothing like walking back to the dorms with gritty sand in your clothes and yet a smile on your face at the end of the day.
Every day would be filled with learning and new connections. A highlight of the Virginia Tech experience were the cybersecurity lessons. Our world is ever-increasing in connectivity and privacy and security are being constantly tested in new ways. Through the TechGirls program, I learned about current methods being used to safeguard our communications with the world around us. Each morning, our classroom would be buzzing with enthusiasm, reflecting the passion and enthusiasm each girl had. This passion gives us the strength to create impact and improvement. Every girl has a vision of a better world and TechGirls gave us the knowledge and an amazing community to support us in our endeavors. I am honored to be part of TechGirls.
