Mariam Q
TechGirl: Mariam Q.
Country: Palestinian Territories
Participation year: 2017
Mariam acted as a coach and mentor to two groups of girls from her former high school, Terra Sancta Girls School–Sisters of St. Joseph-Bethlehem, as they competed in the Technovation Challenge. This commitment included teaching classes in MIT AppInventor, for two hours/week for five weeks, meeting with them for six hours/week over seven weeks in order to be ready for the submission. To be the best mentor she could, she had to improve her own skills in MIT AppInventor. One team won second place and the other won fourth place in the local Technovaton Challenge. Those teams are now going to the global Technovation judges to see if they can become global semifinalists.
She applied for the student ambassador position with Technovation in Palestine. Part of her role, if chosen, would be to encourage girls to participate in the Technovation Challenge, to major in STEM fields, and conduct courses for girls who would not usually have access to programs like Technovation (e.g. those living in remote areas with limited access to computers and/or the internet and who do not have STEM classes at their school.)
Mariam is in her first year in Bethlehem University, majoring in Software Engineering.
