Dr. Robles receives Humanitarian Award
Legacy's President J.E. Rash presents Dr. Harold Robles with Legacy's "Service to Humanity" Award
In honor of our 30th Anniversary, Legacy was pleased to recognize Dr. Harold Robles, Chairman of our International Board of Directors, for his dedication to serving humanity and his lifetime of practical idealism.
Legacy’s President, J. E. Rash presented Dr. Robles with the Legacy Service to Humanity Award on Jan 11, 2010 at Virginia Tech Univeristy where Dr. Robles spoke as part of Legacy’s ongoing Global Viewpoints Forum.
In his lecture, titled “Prevention Through Education: Together We Can Make a Difference,” Dr. Robles spoke about how Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s philosophy of “reverence for life” inspired his own journey of service and work to prevent public health diseases in Southern Africa and around the world.

As a non-profit organization, Legacy International is dedicated to strengthening civil society around the world by helping local citizens create increasingly cooperative and productive lives. This event is part of Legacy’s ongoing Global Viewpoints Forum, bringing experts from around the world together with practical solutions for the world most pressing problems.
Dr. Robles is the current Chairman of Legacy International’s Board of Advisors.
Harold Robles, Phd. is a native of the Netherlands, and has devoted his life to promoting healthcare education as a human right. Dr. Robles holds a Ph.D. in Public Health and was recently appointed distinguished visiting professor in Public Health, Education and the Humanities at American International College. More than 30 years ago, Dr. Robles founded the Albert Schweitzer Institute for the Humanities.
In 1999, Dr. Robles co-founded the Medical Knowledge Institute, a nonprofit organization associated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations that is dedicated to the premise that healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. The programs of MKI aim to improve the quality of healthcare and to promote humanitarian values through education and public health programs.
At the American Public Health Association convention in 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson foundation extended an award to Dr. Robles for his work in advancing public health systems. Dr. Robles and his co-founder Dr. Peter Bittel are nominated for the Bill and Melinda Gates Global Health Award in 2010.
In April 2009 Dr. Harold Robles was appointed Knight in the Order of Oranje-Nassau by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. In addition, on World AIDS Day 2009 Dr. Robles received the Humanitarian Award from the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa.
